COVID-19 Caused Increased Injuries & What to Do Next

Covid-19 and measures undertaken against it caused changes in people’s behavior; therefore, changes in injury patterns during Covid-19 outbreak are no exception when compared to the previous years.

According to recent studies, Covid-19 and subsequent lockdowns caused many people to take one of two approaches to their fitness routine. While some people opted to spend lockdowns sitting at their computer, watching TV and enjoying extended periods of inactivity, whereas some others in an attempt to get in the greatest form of their lives decided to work out more. Despite appearing to be unrelated, both of these choices have resulted in a rise in the number of persons suffering from musculoskeletal injuries.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are conditions in which the work environment and the performance of work contribute significantly to the condition.

What is the Reason of Increase in Injuries?

Most people were unable to take personal training services due to the COVID-19 issue.

As a result, many people who intended to increase their physical activity did so without the guidance of a competent personal trainer. In addition to exercising unsupervised, research has revealed that they worked out longer and harder than would have been reasonable, as well as attempted more severe forms of exercise.

On the other hand, those who stopped exercising or reduced their activity levels during the pandemic and instead spent more time watching TV, playing computer games, or sitting for extended amounts of time got deconditioned.

Both, severe forms of exercise without proper instruction and getting deconditioned due to long duration of inactivity, resulted in people experiencing musculoskeletal injuries.

Getting Back to Normal

Personal trainers familiar with corrective exercise approaches are in a unique position to help people overcome pain, injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders that have resulted from over- or under-exercising during the pandemic.

Providing Assistance to Over-Exercisers

Those who have acquired injuries in their zealous quest of maximum fitness will benefit the most from including rest, recuperation and rejuvenation activities into their exercise routine. These individuals are guided by personal trainers to take days off from rigorous activities and instead engage in self-myofascial release (Foam rolling is a self-myofascial release (SMR) stretching technique) and mild stretching exercises that are suited for their musculoskeletal ailment or condition. Corrective exercise strategies are prioritized for areas of the body that were overly strained, stressed, and/or injured during high levels and intensities of activity.

Providing Assistance to Under-Exercisers

The adoption of gradual progression will aid a person, deconditioned due to inactivity, to resume pre-pandemic physical activity levels. A personal trainer guides such a person on the need of addressing musculoskeletal changes caused by prolonged static postures like sitting as well as the importance of gradually reintroducing exercise stress to protect their bodies from the discomfort and injury that can arise if they overdo it when they return to their fitness protocols.

Conclusion

Personal trainers of Team AbhiFit with corrective exercise expertise are in a great position to help both, those who have suffered musculoskeletal problems as a result of too much or too little activity during Covid-19 to recover from pain and injuries sustained during the pandemic or to properly reintroduce exercising to people who are unfit and out of shape as a result of long periods of inactivity.
